How do i put out an oil fire on my stove?

I had a pan catch on fire today when the oil started boiling, how do i put out a fire as such? How do i put out an oil fire on my stove?
The answer will depend on what is available.

First turn off the fire under the pan.

Then if possible place lid on the pan, or plate or baking sheet or use dry chemical fire extinguisher to complete the job.

If you do not have a fire extinguisher baking soda may help if you sprinkle it on top of the oil.

It is also possible that a wet towel over the pan might smother the fire. Do not try to use water or attempt to move the pan, either is very dangerous. How do i put out an oil fire on my stove?
Put a HEAVY cover on it to smother it. You can also use backing soda. DO NOT USE WATER this will only spread the fire (the oil will float on top of the water.) if you have a Kitchen Extinguisher then use it.
Ideally you should have a fire extinquisher in the kitchen, but since that apparently is not an option, baking soda works as will flour.

Be sure and turn off the burner first then toss handfuls of baking soda on the fire. If it continues to spread, you really need to call 911.
baking soda
you should put a cover on it to put it out
AND SO YOU GOT ON LINE TO ASK THIS QUESTION???

As you type it out is your kitchen going up in flames ???

BAKING SODA.

OR a fire extinguisher for oil!
salt
Normally if you cover the pan with another pan, or the top of a pot the same size, the fire will go out as soon as the oxygen has been consumed... Never use water for an oil fire.

Baking soda also helps to put out this type of fire...or sand
sounds crazy, but throw some table salt on it. you might have to use a good bit.
take the pan OFF THE STOVE and put it in the sink DO NOT DUMP IT OUT and for the love of God NEVER EVER POUR WATER ON IT or else you will have bigger problems

if its not a lot of oil in the pan, try ot put a towel over it. not a paper towel might i add.
Do NOT NOT NOT put water on it. The vapor from the expanding gas will create a huge fireball. Usually the bottles say to take away from heat, put a lid on, and wait for the flame to go out. Good luck, and be careful please. I hope you have fun cooking! (when your pot full of flaming oil cools off).
use baking soda put it on the fire water will not work
Turn off burner. Carefully slide a big lid onto it. That will starve the fire of oxygen. My mom always told me to throw baking powder on it, never water.. I keep a little fire extinguisher to the side of the stove. If you have to leave the kitchen while something is cooking take a wooden spoon or something similar with you to remind you there is something cooking. Never cook oil on high heat. That's how I started an oil fire.

Try using a candy thermometer to check the temp.
First option, shut everything down and smother the fire by Covering it with the pan's lid. That way you might still be able to eat the food afterwards.

Second, if you don't have an appropriate lid, smother it with baking soda or use a dry fire extinguisher. Not sure about flour, that can combust under the right circumstances.

Do NOT spray water at it, that will only spread the fire! Do not move the pan. The risk of spreading the fire is very high for that as well.
Make sure the oil stay off the side and bottom of the pan. If you cant, turn heat down.
make sure u through the pan in a spot on the floor if you can to not let it get out of hand and have a big box of backing soda to neutralize it .
Whoa, bad answer. DO NOT PICK UP THE PAN!!! cover with a lid to smother the flames or use a dry chemical fire extinguisher. And by all means do NOT add water!!!

p.s. I always have a plan ready when cooking with oil I have the lid and extinguisher ready!!! No time to think when it hits the fan.
Use flour.

The oil will burn itself out, though.
Salt or Baking Soda.
Add GAsoline !!!
throw a thick blanket over it
Put the lid on top..
