All petroleum or vegetable-based oils will burn. What it takes to ignite them varies widely from one type of oil to another. The one thing they all have in common is that the oil must be vaporized before it will burn. There is a characteristic temperature for each oil, called its flash point, at which there will be enough vapor in the air above it to ignite if an ignition source is present. A few degrees above that is the fire point, at which the vapor will not just flash and go out but sustain a continuous flame.How fast does it take for oil to catch fire? (2nd time sorry)?
Well the theory goes like this...
If the hydrogen atoms in the oil is free i mean to say not bonded the oil, fire catches the fastest... If there are more carbon atoms it takes little time...
Other factors which depends are the viscocity, temperature, pressure, content of oxygen... If any catalyst present still more fast...
when oil reaches it's flash point it will burn like fuel oil ,it burns hot and fast..........tom
