When the fire is on (normally burning wood), it also supplies the central heating, with the oil burner only kicking in as required for top-up.
This still gives the control offered by the boiler timer, and during colder spells when the fire is on, a background heat is provided when the fire is damped down overnight.
As I live in the country, the logs for the fire are usually obtained from windfall boughs, or routine tree thinning, so doesn't cost anything. We have an oil boiler would a fire with boiler behind be better and cheaper?
Doubt it And not so efficient at heating the waterWe have an oil boiler would a fire with boiler behind be better and cheaper?
maybe cheaper but less efficient , you also miss out on the fact that you dont have the heat on a timer , if you come home cold and wet , you have to wait an hour for the rads to heat up.
if you are in the uk,then you cant get back boilers anymore.a band A condensing boiler is the most efficient appliance for central heating and hot water.if you are referring to solidfuel then yes it might be cheaper, but its a lot less controlable and more work to maintain.parkray, trianco and charnwood all make good solid fuel roomheaters.
Not sure....can you not get gas....a combi boiler would be cheaper still....coal has gone up as well you know....
