Could the oil sand of canada catch fire?

My impression is that there is so much sand in it, that even if a bit catches fire, it does not spread very much. The huge mechanical shovels used to extract the tar sands glow red hot from the friction, and this does not cause fires that spread. And they have been extracting oil from tar sands for years and years now, in huge projects.Could the oil sand of canada catch fire?
