Your wood is in no more danger than any other in igniting. The way to control your danger is to control ignition hazards. Keep your wiring and heating systems in good order. Don't accumulate unnecessary trash and storage of combustibles.

Use good judgment, always supervise cooking, don't smoke, don't use flammable liquids indoors. Maintain smoke detectors and a working extinguisher. These are the ways to keep safe from fire. The oil in the wood is impossible to remove, it has dried over 35 years and my guess is that it is a minimal increase in combustible nature. How can i prevent a fire in my attic? First is the oil that was used flammable? Secondly, even if this is true to be of concern you would have to reach the flash point of the oil in the attic temperatures. Do you think this is possible in your attic? If so you have to ask yourself why and then go about removing the things that promote this kind of situation.

For example if you thought heat could build up in the attic you might wish to promote ventilation with an opening at the top and at the bottom of the attic. This might be done in such a way to let out heat but keep water from entering.
If the oil dried and the residue and vapors have evaporated there is no problem. If you have oily rags in a can, well that can ignite. But if you are really interested, there is a fireproof paint HY-TECH on the internet
