Is using used motor oil to start a fire ok?

Hi,

lately when I change the oil on my cars I have been using the old oil in my fireplace.

Is this ok?

Thanks

I wouldnt advise it John, The oil residue in the smoke will coat the creosote in your chimney and make it more likely that you will have a chimney fire.

If you are looking for a good fireplace accelerant try a paper bag filled with dry pine cones or dry twigs. Light the bottom of the bag first and that puppy will get hot enough to start the other logs in a flash.
